There are two main types of carbon footprints: primary footprint and secondary footprint. Let's dive deeper into each one.
Your primary footprint consists of the total greenhouse gases that are directly emitted because of you through the burning of fossil fuels. This may be due to the driving of your car, heating your home, or flying on the plane. All of these activities contribute to the emission of greenhouse gases.
Your secondary footprint is the total greenhouse gases emitted indirectly because of you. For example, when you buy food that is imported to your country by plane, there would be greenhouse gases emitted even though you are not the one emitting it.
Why is it important to understand the types of carbon footprint?
Both the primary and secondary carbon footprint make up our individual carbon footprint. By understanding how the carbon footprint works, the factors that contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, and how our own actions are directly or indirectly associated the greenhouse gas effect, we can make changes for a more sustainable future.
